Description

Why is this necessary? It is required because there are many types of tape drive, but more importantly, data, files etc that can be written on tapes in many different ways. To read a tape, not only is a compatible tape drive is required, but also compatible software to read the logical structure of the tape. Media Merge PC is this bridge software that contains many routines to read most tape formats. It therefore does not matter if the tape was originally produced on a mainframe system with a 3490E, or a Unix system or a PC using a DAT etc, MMPC can probably read it. What is more, the user does not need to know any technical details of the original system, not even the block size that the tape was written with.

Media Merge PC contains all drivers for all tape drives, but more importantly, also emulates all tape operating systems. No additional tape drivers will need to be installed for SCSI drives, only occasionally for parallel port and IDE drives.

What about new tape formats being produced? Again, there is no problem as MMPC is being continuously updated to support new formats, and as often happens, new variations of existing formats. Formats have been added to the system at the rate of 1-2 a month. New drive handlers will also be added to the system, but it is possible to map new drives to existing handlers.
